The Baan Kamlangchay family

I founded Baan Kamlangchay Co. Ltd in 2003. What initially was a small shared apartment in a newly developed village on the outskirts of Chiang Mai developed over the years into a large family. Our blended family: My wife Nid and I, our son Pepino, our daughter/stepdaughter Joy, my mother (died 2006) and my stepfather (died 2020). Then there are our guests with dementia, usually 14 in number, and at least 42 carers. And the logistical staff.

The Baan Kamlangchay family consists of almost 70 people. In addition, there are regular visits from our guests’ relatives, visits from friends and relatives as well as specialists and media professionals.

The fact that I emigrated to Thailand with my mother, who had Alzheimer’s, raised many questions among the general population and also attracted great interest from the media. Strengthened by the positive experiences of a new care model for my mother, combined with the fact that a new life’s work could emerge from a tragic family situation, something like a pioneering spirit emerged. Baan Kamlangchay developed into a large family with a strong bond, which always remained manageable in its activities and has become an integral part of village life. I am convinced that this naturalness and the integration in the community contribute significantly to Baan Kamlangchay being able to function successfully even today.

Medical and specialist support

In order to ensure medical control and care, we have contacts with medical examiners in various private hospitals. They also advise us on the medication each guest is taking and on medical clarifications and any hospital stays. If there is a hospital stay, the three carers will accompany the guest in the hospital around the clock.

Baan Kamlangchay does not have any medical staff on site, but works closely with existing private hospitals in Chiang Mai. These are equipped with very good doctors (including specialists) and a comprehensive infrastructure. In the event of an emergency, we use the nearest private hospital (approx. 2 km). Our staff receives regular training on emergency management and prophylaxis.

Baan Kamlangchay has achieved a high level of awareness thanks to the large media presence and word of mouth. As a result, many specialists are now interested in the work of Baan Kamlangchay and are visiting us. They often also offer workshops for our carers. These stays are always enriching for both sides, as the specialists incorporate elements and new ideas into their everyday working lives in the care of people with dementia
